Gnocchi

By Hannah1 min read
Gnocchi
Gnocchi are soft, small dumplings in Italian cuisine, traditionally made from a simple mixture of wheat flour, potatoes, eggs, and salt. Variations can include semolina flour, cheese, breadcrumbs, or cornmeal, with added herbs, vegetables, or spices. Alternatives like sweet potatoes or rice flour can also be used. Gnocchi are cooked in boiling salted water until they float and are often served with sauces like melted butter with sage, pesto, or tomato sauce. They can be enjoyed as a first course (primo) or as a side dish (contorno) with main courses. The word "gnocchi" likely derives from the Italian *nocchio* (a knot in wood) or *nocca* (knuckle), reflecting their shape. This dish has ancient origins, dating back to Roman times when similar dumplings made from semolina porridge and eggs were prepared. The introduction of potatoes to Europe led to the creation of potato-based gnocchi, especially popular in regions like Lombardy and Lazio. Today, gnocchi are available in homemade, specialty shop, or mass-produced forms, making them a versatile and beloved Italian dish.
